A Statement of Solidarity to our Muslim Brothers and Sisters in their Feast of Sacrifice

Today, Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid al-Adha or the “feast of the sacrifice” of the Prophet Abraham’s devotion to Allah. The celebration falls close to September 11 when the Twin Towers of New York were brought to ground zero by the Al-Qaeda terrorist group in 2001.

Several days ago, the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), a terrorist group linked to the Al-Qaeda wreaked havoc in Sulu when it beheaded one of its hostages. This was followed by the bombing of Davao City that left 14 people dead and 67 others injured on September 2.

Every time terror attacks take place, confusion and fear give rise to a more dangerous sentiment: hatred against Muslims. This is because terrorism has always been perceived by many as linked to Islamists and Muslims are viewed as terrorists or supporters of terrorists. It blurs the fact that terrorism targets indiscriminately. It knows no race, no ethnicity, no gender and no religion. Thousands have been victims of terrorism in several countries since 9/11. Tension remains high, discrimination runs deep and division poses a great challenge.

But what is Muslim?  According to a scholar, Muslim is a follower of Islam religion and Quran said that, “…Islam is surrender to God: (Who can better in religion than who surrendereth his purpose to God while doing good (to men)? (IV: 125), “Turn unto him repentant and submit to Him” (XXXIII: 54”[1]

In these difficult times, may the spirit of sacrifice strengthen our resolve, our understanding and tolerance so that we may come together as one amidst the continuing threats of division.

Let us continue breaking down the walls of hatred and building bridges of peace through learning exchanges, dialogues and solidarity.

Let us continue condemning the acts of violence and terror while celebrating the peace-building efforts in our communities.

Protect human rights in the pursuit of peace and justice

Statement on the Sulu crisis and Davao bombing

On September 02, 2016 a bomb exploded in Davao City and killed 16 individuals and left 67 others injured. The bombing was claimed by the Abu Sayyaf- a terrorist group pursued by the government troops after it beheaded an 18-year old man hostage when his family failed to give ransom in exchange for his release. 

Meanwhile, the ongoing military pursuit against the terrorist group and rescue operation of the remaining hostages in Sulu caused more than one thousand (1, 000) civilians to leave their homes and stay in evacuation centers for fear of being caught in the crossfire. 

We strongly condemn these senseless acts of violence that caused the loss of lives and ignited widespread fear and raised anti-Muslim sentiments among peoples in the country. Violence and atrocities like these is gradually destroying the remaining social fabric and therefore has no space in a civilized society like Philippines.  

As we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the victims of the explosion, we also call for the government to:

(1) provide immediate support and medical attention to the injured and their families; 

(2) facilitate a thorough and objective investigation of the bombing while strictly adhering to due process and protection of human rights in its pursuit of the perpetrators; and 

(3) gear its response to the current situation towards improving unity and solidarity among its peoples.

As we support the pursuit for a peaceful Mindanao, we demand to uphold civilian supremacy: fundamental human rights shall be respected and protected at all times and most especially in times of conflict. 

The acts of terror are geared to create confusion, irrational fear and hatred among the people. Hence, we ask the public to remain steadfast, calm and vigilant in this crucial time. 

May peace be upon us all.

NAMAO Statement on its 2nd Founding Anniversary Celebration

The election of President Duterte to office was evident enough to say that the mass majority of the Philippine population is fed-up with the shallow political promises and rhetoric. The demand for change has never been more resounding. It opened up opportunities for the majority poor and working people to raise concrete proposals and persistently engage the current administration.

We, as small organic farmers and rural workers of the Nagkahiusang Mag-uumang Organiko (NAMAO), an organization of Indigenous Peoples and Christian family-based organic farmers and rural workers in Agusan del Sur and Caraga Region believe that change must be the inclusive peace and development programs that recognize, promote and uphold the key role of the peoples in grassroots communities.

We believe that as the people who feed the world, our genuine participation in sustaining the alternative efforts in promoting and advancing ecological, diversified, organic and integrated sustainable agriculture is essential in eliminating massive hunger and poverty that is widely-experienced by people in the world.

For two years, we have been a partner of line agencies in the promotion of organic agriculture and peoples’ participation in governance. We have been accredited to the municipal government unit of Sibagat, Agusan del Sur and Caraga regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment and have participated and organized several activities and trainings on organizational and technical capacitation in partnership with Department of Agriculture (Sibagat Municipal and Caraga Regional offices), Kilusang Maralita sa Kanayunan (KILOS KA), Mindanao Peoples’ Peace Movement (MPPM) and other civil society organizations.

With our experience, we stand firm on our resolve that, key to Change is the real participation of peoples and communities, reiterating that development framework must give emphasis to organic agriculture, environment and the right to human dignity – sensitive enough to community and peoples’ cultures and traditions.

Hence, we appeal to the current President Duterte administration to implement the Organic Agriculture Act (RA 10068), an act providing for the development and promotion of organic agriculture in the Philippines, consistent to the policy of the State to promote, propagate, develop further and implement the practice of organic agriculture in the Philippines that will cumulatively condition and enrich the fertility of the soil, increase farm productivity, reduce pollution and destruction of the environment, prevent the depletion of natural resources, further protect the health of farmers, consumers, and the general public, and save on imported farm inputs and recognizes and supports the central role of the farmers, indigenous people and other stakeholders at the grassroots in this program. In addition this must be accompanied with sustainable support mechanisms for the practitioners particularly the small farmers and rural workers.

As we celebrate our 2nd Founding Anniversary on September 21, we stand with all of the dreamers and workers for people-based Change, Peace and Development.

We invite you all to join our celebration. Celebrating our continuing efforts as part and partner for the common good and protection of the common goods – land, forests, food, waters and rivers, air and life.

Make a Stand for Peace

MindanaOne strongly condemns the Davao City bombing last 2 September 2016 around 10pm that claimed 10 individuals on the spot and injured 60 more. 

We would like to extend our sympathy to the relatives and friends of the victims.

Let us all stand for justice and peace.

We call on authorities to deeply and objectively investigate the incident and bring before the law the culprits and avoid arrest of mistaken identities.

Let us stand against anti-social and illegal activities, crimes and terrorism while concretely addressing unemployment, poverty, hunger, low social services, low wages, precarious living conditions, labor contractualization, high living standard, neglect, marginalization, Lumad Killings and Corporate assaults to environment and communities, and more that day to day terrorized the mass majority of the population too.

Let us remain critical and vigilant to declarations of the government. Law enforcement first and foremost shall ensure protection of the population and their inherent rights.

Of the same degree we would like to express our solidarity to civilian communities in Sulu affected by the ongoing atrocities in their communities displacing thousands.

Let us all stay calm and alert. Let us strengthen our unity and solidarity and do not allow subjective judgements against each other particularly on our faiths.

The Struggle for Life with Dignity Continues - MindanaOne Cotabato City

National and Local Election has just been ended. Though there are still candidates in the national and local posts who are victoriously waiting to be officially declared as winners or are planning to concede out of hope of winning.

Filipinos, registered voters or not are all witnesses to this “democratic” process – a process that has two faces. One where corruption, fraudulence and filthiness prevails played by the powerful, greedy and self-centered individuals collaborating with the economic oligarchs and on the other where hopes for change are the only weapon of the marginalized and oppressed individuals and social sections.

Being consistent to engage the electoral process as one of the means to win the demand of the marginalized and oppressed sectors in Mindanao, the MindanaOne in Cotabato City did have its political journey in the May 9, 2016 elections. Worse than the previous one, the 2016 election prevails massive vote-buying; violence (killings, bombings, riots, etc); disenfranchisement of voters; flying voters flocked who are either minor, unregistered or multiple voters; unsystematic polling stations as some precincts do not prioritize elderly people, pregnant women, and differently-abled persons; pre-shading of ballots; harassment of election supervisors and stealing of ballots.

But despite of this sad reality MindanaOne-Cotabato City would still continue to fight for life with dignity and we will engage the government in different forms for this cause.

We call upon and challenge the new national and local government administrations to seriously address the concerns and prioritize the demands of the local and overseas workers for decent pay, benefits and regular jobs; to develop a people-centered, eco-friendly and sustainable local economy; to provide efficient social services to the people without discrimination; and to include all sectors at the margin in all political and peace processes especially in Mindanao.

Particularly to the newly-elected government officials of Cotabato City, we are calling for your attention to work particularly on the social services and development for women, youth, workers, urban poor, farmers and fishers, transport workers; investigation and legislative actions on labor, wage and benefits issues for workers in the city; and the legislative and executive actions to stop trafficking of persons.

For MindanaOne - Cotabato City, the May 9, 2016 election is not the end of the struggle. The struggle continues until the peoples live with dignity.

Aftereffects, MindanaOne to Move Forward

MindanaOne reiterates Commitment to Struggle for Peoples' Democratic Rights and Welfare.

MindanaOne in a statement posted in its blogsite have expressed their engagement in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections but without illusion that the results will resolve the sad situation of the majority workers, poor and marginalized sectors of the society.

"It seems, the turn out for the National posts manifested the cry of the people for a change of leadership and frustrations from the lame and undecisive leadership for the past decade of the country," MindanaOne Chair Abulcair Balindong said. "And this is a big challenge not only for the elected candidates but also for the progressive groups and marginalized sectors to ensure consolidated and organized actions for the peoples demands and not be over-riden by the elites' interests," he added.

"We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to those who believed in us and our campaign for Partido Manggagawa Partylist and to the volunteers and those who have spent their energy despite of security and difficult situations. Whatever the outcome, we have so much efforts and tried to bring back an addition to marginalized workers and communities in the House of Representatives through Partylist System. It won't stop there," he added.

"Well, on Partylist elections, majority of the candidate parties were from rich and political clans. They were able to negotiate votes and even used symbiotically for common benefits which is to have votes. And Partylist groups are also involved in vote-buying. This is really sad. Partylist elections in the Philippines have been bastardized for so long. We don't lost hope still. This is part of our agenda, to have substantial reform for the law," Mr Balindong on the Partylist System.

When asked about their observations, Mr Balindong shared the group's list. "Though there were efforts to make it appear to public that this year's electoral process is different from the past, MindanaOne have observations: Massive and Organized Cheating across the Country; Violence (Threats, Killings, Injuries, Burning of Polling Centers, Grenade and IED explosions nearby polling centers and Harassment); Vote buying still rampant; Reports of Voters' Disenfranchisement; Express Lanes for PWDs, Pregnants and Senior Citizens are not enough; Pre-Shading of Ballots; VCMs malfunctioned; Flying Voters flooded; Minors are used to vote those who are not around; minors have been registered as voters; Reports of BEIs withdrawn from the task to assist due to security situation; Delay of Precinct Opening for Voting; A Person was able to vote more than once; Other person is voting for the other; and more... with these observations, Credibility of the Election Results are problematic. And we are challenging the COMELEC to have concrete actions to these few only of the reported cases."

"On our post-election plans, we already expressed less expectations from the political candidates running for office in the May 9, 2016 National and Local Elections in the Philippines. Of course they were all claiming to be champions of peoples’ interests. They all cared and to care for the poor and for the environment but do not even presented concrete how’s of such pronouncements. What glaring were the billions spent for the campaign sorties and political advertisements at the very period when majority of the peoples and communities are starving with no food on their plates," Mr Balindong added.

According to Mr Balindong, "While we did engaged elections, but we have no illusion that this is alone the solution. MindanaOne have clear beyond election pro-peoples, pro-workers, pro-environment and pro-human rights platforms and agenda that guided us in our engagement this electoral process and prepared us for the non-stop struggle for democratic reforms and peoples' rights in different forms and venues. Yes, we will engage the new administration for the peoples' welfare and rights."

He then called all groups to develop and enrich sustainable economic and democratic governance models and advance People’s Democratic Rights and Welfare all the time and anywhere beyond slogans.

"There is no stopping in this struggle for a life with dignity unless it becomes true," Mr Balindong concluded.

Kabataan at ang Halalan: Pagkakataon at Hamon

Magandang Araw sa Lahat!

Isang prebilihyo ang makapagsalita sa harap ng mga lider-kabataang tulad ng pagkakataong ito. Binabati ko po ang mga organisador at tagasuporta nitong Maguindanao-Cotabato Youth Peace Camp ng Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan (AKMK).

Ang patuloy na pagkakaroon ng ispasyo upang mag-usap at magpalitan ng mga pananaw upang buklod na tugunan ang mga hamon bilang kabataan ay mahalaga at nararapat lang na ipagdiwang. Sa loob ng labin-tatlong taon buhat nang maitatag ang Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan ay nanatili itong tagpuan natin upang sabay na humakbang.

Laging sinasabi na ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan at hindi pala-asa o hindi paasa. Ang pagsasalarawang ito ay hindi simpleng katagang lutang kundi punong-puno ng hugot at batayan.

May mga nauna nang nagpatunay na ang kabataan ay malakas na pwersang gumawa na ng guhit sa kasaysayan sa mundo. May mga kilalang personalidad at kilusan sa ibang bahagi ng mundo at maging dito sa ating konteksto.

Nariyan ang mga tulad nila Apolinario Mabini, Emilio Jacinto, Andres Bonifacio, Jose Rizal, Gregorio del Pilar, Heneral Juan Luna, Gabriela Silang at marami pang ibang di  tanyag. Nariyan din ang mga kilala sa daigdig na nakibaka para sa kagalingan at kapakanan ng mga mamamayan tulad nila Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Fredriech Engels, Fidel Castro, Ernesto Guevara, Nelson Mandela, Leon Trotsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Antonio Gramcsi at iba pa sa iba’t-ibang larangan. Alam ko na maraming tulad nila Sultan Kudarat, Nur Misuari, Hashim Salamat at mga bayaning Katutubo pa na hindi naging tanyag pero mahalaga ang ambag para sa karapatan ng mga pamayanan.

Sa panahon ng diktaduryang Marcos kung saan ay bawal ang kahit na magpulong ang magkapitbahay lalo na seguro ang ganito kadami dahil banta umano sa seguridad ng bayan na sa katotohanan naman ay banta lamang laban sa diktadurya, ay maraming katulad din ninyong kabataan ang hinarap ang hamon laban sa pagkitil sa karapatan at kalayaan ng mga mamamayan. Ang katulad nila Edgar Jopson, Lorena Barrios, Hilao sisters, Jan Quimpo, Conrado Balweg, at marami pang anak ay nag-alay ng buhay para sa sambayanan. Maging matapos ang diktadurya ay may katulad nila Lean Alejandro na biktima ng maka-iilang interes. At maraming nagpapatuloy pa.

Iyon ay dahil sa kalagayan at konteksto ng mga panahong iyon. Ang mga kabataan ang pinakahanda at pinakamatalas mag-isip at sumuri ng kalagayan nila. Sila din sa panahong iyon ang nag-organisa sa lahat ng seksyon ng lipunan at mga mamamayan.

Sa kasalukuyan, marami pa ring tulad nung mga nabanggit at di ko nabanggit na mga pangalan. Subalit, iilan na lang sila kumpara sa pangkalahatan. Kung noon ay PAG-ASA ang turing, mukhang PAASA at PALA-ASA na lang. Hindi ito dahil gusto ng mga kabataan kundi itinulak sa ganitong sitwasyon ng sistemang ummiral. Hinati, nilinlang at nilibang ang kabataan ng teknolohiya at partisan mainstream social organizations.

Napapansin natin na mas babad ang kabataan sa internet kaysa aralin ang lipunan. Mas malawak ang pag-oorganisa sa mga barkadahan kaysa socio-civic at political mass organizations. Pero atleast andun pa rin yung katangian ng pakikipag-ugnayan. Subalit, mas matingkad ang PAGKA-INDIBIDWALISTA kaya napakadaling puksain ang anumang init at inisyatiba ng mga kabataan para sa pagbabago. Abala ang kabataan sa kasalukuyan sa pag-iisip kung paano suklian ang pamilyang nagpaaral sa kanya kaya hindi prayoridad ang paglahok sa mga organisasyon sa paggawa dahil bawal sabi ng may-ari ng negosyo; kapit sa pulitikong kuno ay sponsor ng scholarship nito; wala pa dito ang kalagayang di na nakapag-aral kaya kailangang magsikap para mabuhay sa anumang paraan.

Mula taong 2005 hanggang 2013 ay 7% hanggang 8% ang naitalang kawalang trabaho sa Pilipinas ayon sa International Labor Organization; hindi bababa sa anim na milyon ang naitala ng National Statistics ang walang trabaho; umangat daw ang bilang ng may trabaho pero hindi naman sustenable dahil sa kalakarang kontraktwal. Maraming nagugutom at mababa ang serbisyong panlipunan. Talamak ang kurapsyon at nanatiling Malaya ang mga mandarambong. Patuloy ang pangingitil ng buhay ng mga nakikibaka at lider ng mga kilusang panlipunan.

Ang mga ganitong kalagayan, ay gaya din noong panahon nila Rizal at Bonifacio. Tulad din ito nung panahon nila Che Guevara sa kanilang mga konteksto. Bakit kaya kay hirap pakilusin ang kabataan ngayon? Bakit ba ang hirap mag-organisa?

Ngayon ay panahon ng halalan. Magpapalit tayo ng pamunuan sa bansa at ating mga lokalidad. Maraming nagpapapili ngayon. Maraming magagaling at matatalino para paglingkuran ang mamamayan.

Sa kabilang banda ay polisiya at hinahayaan ng pamahalaan ang Kontratwalisasyon at pagbabawal sa mga manggagawang bumuo ng union; malawak ang nagugutom at naghihirap; malawak ang isinadlak ng pagmamalimos sa kanilang mga karapatan sa mga may kapangyarihan; nangingibabaw interes ng mga gahamang kapitalista at pulitiko.

Maliwanag, ang halalan ay palaruan ng mga korporasyon at maka-iilang interes. Pero ito sana noong una ay isang paraan upang ang isang lipunan ay kolektibong pumili ng kanilang mga pinuno. Ngayon, ay tila isang horror na comedy na thriller at crime movie. Pinangibabawan na ng interes ng mga gustong manatili sa kanilang kapangyarihan at sa mga uhaw sa kapangyarihan.

At nakikita natin ang kabataan kahit saan sa mga grupong ito… bilang taga-dikit ng poster, taga-distribute ng leaflets, taga-sayaw at taga-aliw sa mga botanteng kinakapanyahan, taga-flood like and share sa mga social media, taga-mobilisa ng mga supporters at marami pa. Mayron pa ngang sila mismo ang kandidato kapalit nung mga retired nang kamag-anak sa tungkulin.

Hindi naman din ibig sabihin na wala nang mabuting naiambag ang kabataan sa kasalukuyan. Andyan pa kayo na mga aktibista sa kapayapaan, kalikasan, karapatang pantao, bantay ng halalan at nag-oorganisa para sa panlipunang katarungan. Subalit hindi pa sapat.

Dito mismo sa lugar na malapit sa atin, tatlo na ang nagpakamatay dahil sa kawalan ng pag-asa dulot ng EL NINO at kahirapan; maraming bilang na ang lumikas mula sa kanilang mga tirahan upang makipagsapalaran sa ibang lugar; may mga naibenta na ang mga alagang hayop upang itaguyod ang buhay; marami na ang nilisan ang pamilya upang makahanap ng paraang tustusan ang pangangailangan… ilan sa atin dito ang kahit sa isip man lang ay sinubukang tumulong o ang ishare ang mga balita tungkol sa saklap na kalagayan sa ating mga komunidad? Ilan sa atin dito ang nakakaalam at kahit munting paraa’y gumawa ng paraan? Ilan ba sa atin dito ang nagreklamo sa mahal ng presyo ng bilihin at petrolyo? Nung pinaslang ang mga nagtanggol sa kanilang mga lupaing ninuno at teritoryo, may na-ipost ba tayo o napag-usapan ba natin sa ating mga organisasyon? Nung may mga nagsilikas mula sa kanilang mga bansa dahil taggutom, gyera at pinapatay sila at ilang buwan silang palutang-lutang sa karagatan, may kahit pahayag ba tayo? Ilan sa atin dito ang nagalit dahil sa baba ng sahod ng mga manggagawa? Ilan sa atin dito ang nagpakita ng kilos laban sa pagwasak ng kalikasan? Alam ko marami sa inyo dito may mga ginawa at mayron ding wala… at sana matapos itong pagtitipon ay kikilos na lahat tayo.

Hindi ito upang sumbatan tayo kundi upang masubukan nating iugnay ang ating mga sarili sa mga usaping panlipunan at ipaalala sa atin na ang lahat ng bagay at kaganapan sa ating paligid ay nakakaapekto din sa atin at sa kinabukasan. At patuloy ito na hamon sa ating lahat. Hindi ito obligasyon ng isang tao lang. Responsibilidad natin ito sa ating mga kapatid at mga susunod na henerasyon.

Naririnig natin ngayon ang iilang mga dinadahilan sa mga ayaw gumawa ng paraan tulad ng walang pamasahe, hindi makapag-meeting dahil sa busy schedules, hindi naipapatupad ang napagkasunduang plano, hindi makakilos dahil walang pundo… ang mga ganitong sitwasyon ay sinyales ng paghina ng kilusan at diwang kabataan.

Hindi ang anumang kakulangan ang makakapigil sa kabataan upang kumilos., napatunayan na ito ng kasaysayan. Dahil ang kabataan ay malikhain at kilalang movers na hindi natitigilan ng kahit anong kakulangan. Malawak at matalas mag-isip ang isang anak kung paano mag-ambag sa ikabubuti ng pamilya lalo na sa komunidad niyang kinalagyan. Hindi pa din naman tayo hopeless. Kailangan lang segurong mag-reflect sa sitwasyon at maiugnay ang bawat sarili sa lipunan. Unang una, dahil bahagi tayo ng lipunan at kung anumang kalagayan at patutunguhan ng lipunang ito ay hindi pwedeng di tayo maaapektuhan. Lahat ng mga hirap at sikap natin ay mapupunta sa wala kung magkakagulo o kinitlan ka ng karapatan. Walang saysay ang lahat na pangarap kung ang kalikasan natin ay tuluyan nang nawasak. Tayo ay bahagi ng sagot. Bahagi tayo ng solusyon.

Ang halalan ay isa lang sa ating mga armas upang maisulong ang ating mga karapatan at panawagan. Walang ilusyon na ito ang tutugon at tanging paraan ng pagbabago dahil ang balangkas mismo at sistemang umiiral ay sistemang maka-iilan at para manatili ang kapangyarihang political at ekonomikal sa kamay ng iilan. Ngunit, pagkakataong ating maipaabot ang ating mga panawagan sa mga di pa natin naaabot. Panahon ding maipasok sa diskursong political ang ating mga agenda. Basta ang maliwanag huwag tayong tumigil matapos ang halalan. Huwag nating isuko sa kamay ng iilan o iisang tao ang ating kapalaran at ang kinabukasan ng ating bayan.

Una sa hamon natin ay ang pagkakaroon ng malinaw na agenda; pangalawa ay ang matibay na buklurang kabataan o kilusan; pangatlo ay ang pakikipag-ugnayan sa iba pang katulad natin ng mga hangarin; pang-apat ay ang pagpapatuloy dahil nakakasawa ang paulit-ulit na pagsisimula. Ibig sabihin natin dito ay ang pagkakaroon ng maliwanag na balangkas at direksyon bilang kilusang kabataan.

Bago ako magtapos at magpasalamat, sa kasalukuyang panahon kinakaharap natin ang napakaraming problema at isyu. Panawagan natin ang Regular na Trabaho, Matinong Serbisyo Publiko, Sapat sa Sweldo, Mababang Presyo, Reporma at Serbisyong Agraryo at Kapayapaan at Kaunlarang para sa Lahat. Magkasama tayo para isulong ang Buhay at Kabuhayang May Dignidad!
